Blackstone, Nusa Dua: The Complete Surf Spot Guide

Blackstone is one of my go-to recommendations for surfers staying in the Nusa Dua area who want real reef-break experience without the intimidation factor of the Bukit’s heavier waves. It’s a fun, distinctive wave with a bit of nuance worth understanding before you go.

Blackstone is a reef break on Bali’s east coast, in Nusa Dua. What makes it distinctive is how the wave actually forms: it’s a wedging left-hand peak created by wave energy reflecting off an offshore island feature — rather than the more typical setup of swell simply refracting around a headland or focusing over a reef shelf. That reflection is what gives Blackstone its characteristic wedge shape.

Blackstone is rated Beginner to Intermediate, with an important nuance: the wave has two distinct character zones. The outer section, where the wedge forms, is better suited to lower intermediates who already have some reef-break comfort. But it then softens into an inside reform section that’s genuinely good for safe training — a forgiving, lower-energy zone where less experienced surfers can build confidence without taking on the more dynamic outer peak.

In practice, this means Blackstone can work for a range of ability levels on the same session, as long as you’re honest about which part of the wave matches where you’re at.

This trips up a lot of visiting surfers who assume “wet season” automatically means worse conditions. It’s the opposite here. During the wet season, Bali’s prevailing winds shift to blow from the northwest — which is onshore chop for the west coast and Bukit, but offshore wind for the east coast, including Nusa Dua. Blackstone and its neighbor Mushroom Rock both shine specifically under these northwest wet-season winds, right when much of the island’s famous west-side surf is being blown out.

Worth knowing so you don’t mix them up: Nusa Dua as a region also contains the Nusa Dua Outer Reefs, massive open-ocean reef passes roughly a kilometer offshore that hold heavy wet-season groundswells up to triple-overhead, requiring step-up boards and serious paddling endurance. That’s a completely different, much more advanced proposition than Blackstone itself. Blackstone is the accessible, friendlier wave in the neighborhood — don’t let Nusa Dua’s reputation for heavier outer reef waves make you think Blackstone is more intimidating than it actually is.

Right alongside Blackstone is Mushroom Rock, a faster, fun right-hand wave offering steep drops and carving faces over deep reef at high tide — a good complementary session if Blackstone’s left isn’t lining up on a given day, though it sits at a slightly higher skill level than Blackstone’s inside section.

If you’re working the inside reform section, a soft-top or standard beginner-friendly board works well — the forgiving nature of that inside zone doesn’t demand a performance board. If you’re experienced enough to be surfing the outer wedge, a shortboard or mid-length suited to reef conditions will let you make the most of that wedging peak shape.

Blackstone is in Nusa Dua, on Bali’s east coast — part of the island’s resort district, making it a convenient, easily accessible option if you’re already staying in that area. Plan your session around the wet season (November–March) for the best combination of clean, offshore wind conditions.

Blackstone is a great example of a wave that rewards a bit of local knowledge — know that its best season runs opposite to the island’s famous west-coast breaks, and know which part of the wave suits your level, and it’s one of the more approachable, fun reef breaks Bali has to offer.
