Wave Characteristics

Break Type: Offshore Reef Break / Predominantly Right-hander
Offshore Reef Break: The waves do not break near the sand; they break far out in the ocean over a deep coral shelf. You usually need to hire a local wooden boat (jukung) to get to the lineup.
Right-hander: Looking toward the shore, the wave peels open from left to right, meaning surfers ride toward their right side.
Skill Level: Intermediate to Advanced
Because it breaks far out at sea, it involves strong ocean currents, heavy water, and requires a confident popup to handle fast, powerful sections.
Optimal Swell: S – SW (South to Southwest)
Swell: Open-ocean wave energy. Nusa Dua acts as a massive “swell magnet” that catches almost all wave energy passing by the island, meaning it often has large waves even when other spots are flat.
Optimal Wind: W – NW (West to Northwest)
Offshore Wind: Because it is located on the east coast of Bali, the wind blows offshore (from the land to the ocean) during the wet season (November to March). This makes it the perfect refuge when the west coast spots are blown out and messy.
Ideal Tide: Mid to High Tide
Tide: The rising and falling ocean water level. You need a mid-to-high tide to ensure there is a safe cushion of water over the coral reef.
